2022: Lateral X Iceland

Lateral* has a special ritual for team members reaching the 10 years milestone: choose a point on Earth (the actual process: touch a rotating globe while blindfolded) and you get a free holiday for you and your entire family there. As for my own ten years, the destination turned to be an impossible one to reach, Russia. With support from our CEO I was able to redirect the holiday to another unique place on Earth, Iceland. After careful planning, five curious Transylvanians landed on Keflavik Airport, near Reykjavik. This is a photo journal of a beautiful, unique trip.

Snæfellsnes and Westfjords

It is said the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and the Westfjords are the most authentic, raw, remote regions of Iceland. We spent a few days here, starting with the special Snæfellsnes (a truly diverse, miniature version of Iceland), then moving into the northern part of the region, Westfjords, staying near Ísafjörður.

The North, Lake Myvatn, Arctic Circle

A looong drive took us from Flateyri to Akureyri, the capital of the North. We spent a few nights here and in Laugar, near Lake Myvatn, the central lake and famous geothermal area, including a one day trip to the Northernmost point of Iceland, at Rifstangi, near the Arctic Circle; and admiring Europe’s most powerful waterfalls - Dettifoss and Selfoss.

The East

After Laugar, another long drive, passing Egilsstaðir and reaching for Seydisfjordur, an Eastern fjord with beautiful vistas and spectacular hikes, with light changing minute after minute. A one day trip to visit one of the most famous places for spotting puffins and their nests - Borgarfjörður Eystri (spoiler, the place was not populated yet). And next, Djupivogur, the scenic Southeastern coast on our way to Hofn, the unofficial capital of the Icelandic Lobster.

The South

The famous, touristic South Coast and the Golden Circle. Iconic beaches (Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach, Diamond Beach) and the mighty Vatnajökull, the Glacier, then Skogafoss, the beautiful waterfall. Two nights in Reykholt, a strategic accommodation in order to reach Geysir, Thingvellir National Park, craters, waterfalls and geysers.

Reykjavik

The capital: charming houses, modern museums and an amazing alternative to the famous Blue Lagoon, the new, posh Sky Lagoon.
